Annual Skijoring Competition, January 13 - 14, 2018

Man on Horseback Competitive Event

Witness the exciting winter sport of skijoring at our annual event January 13-14, 2018 in Red River, New Mexico. Skijoring is a thrilling winter sport with speeds of up to 37 mph. The action is fast-paced and exciting. Spectators pack in to get a glimpse of the skiers being towed by a horse running at a full gallop. Join us for all the fun as a competitor or spectator!

The 2018 competition includes four divisions:  open (pro), sport (amateur), novice (beginner) and exhibition ("just for fun" for adults and kids).

America's Cup Event

Red River Skijoring 2018 is slated to be the third event of the season for the Skijoring America's Cup series of races. As an early race and a three-day weekend, it is expected the event will draw even more competitors than previous years. The Red River race will draw competitors who are out to earn points for the series and those seeking to win the purse—or both. 100% of entry fees are paid out along with an estimated $7,500 purse for 2018.

Prior Events

Red River's first skijoring event in January of 2016 boasted 52 teams and paid out roughly $9,800 for the two days of competition.  The second event in 2017 had 50 teams and paid out roughly $5,200 for one day of competition (the second day was cancelled due to unseasonably warm temperatures and therefore dangerous footing for the equine competitors).  The straight 800-foot course in the middle of town on River Street provided great visibility for the spectators.
